SSL Rings Out International Women’s Month with Sold-Out Inaugural EmpowHER Fundraiser
Funds raised will support SSL’s Heidi Dennis Wonder Woman Scholarship and its
Leaders Inspiring Future Trailblazers (LIFT) Mentorship Program
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., April 1, 2023– — The Suits, Stilettos and Lipstick (SSL) Foundation ushered out International Women’s Month with an evening of laughter and FUNdraising on March 28 at the Dania Improv comedy club in Dania Beach. The event included a silent auction, multiple speakers, and a performance by a professional comic. Some 200 people attended the sold-out event.
Founded in 2012, SSL is a 501c3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to empower women and children from all walks of life to be resilient, self-confident, and purposeful leaders through education, mentorship, and community outreach.
Major EmpowHER sponsors included Chase Roofing and Broward College as partners, and Lifestyle Media Group as media sponsor. Emcees were Kim Sarni, managing director of Lifestyle Media Group; and Cindy Sessoms of Coldwell Banker Realty. Event co-chairs were Dr. Elizabeth Molina and Tamara Chase. Molina is dean, Education Pathway, and dean, Central Campus Academic Affairs, both at Broward College. Chase is owner of Chase Roofing. Dr. Elizabeth King, SSL founder and chief Inspiration officer (CIO), also addressed the gathering.
First awarded in 2019, The Heidi Dennis Wonder Woman Scholarship Program is a needs-based scholarship that provides financial assistance to women who are pursuing higher education or vocational studies to support themselves and advance their careers. It was founded in honor of Heidi Dennis, who served as chairwoman of SSL for six years and was the former general manager of the Pelican Grand Beach Resort. Heidi was an industry icon in the hotel business and a true inspiration to all who knew her.
Two past Heidi Dennis Wonder Woman Scholarship Award recipients, Ruth Chinedu and Trizel Leith, spoke about the life-changing impact the scholarship and LIFT mentoring program have had on them. They focused not just on the financial aid they received but also on the life-affirming self-confidence boost they found through mentoring.
“I am so proud of our community for coming together to give women the opportunity to pursue their dreams,” said King. “It is truly heartwarming to see the impact that we can make when we come together.”
