Have you ever heard the expression “things happen for a reason”? It could not be truer than in the case of how Suits, Stilettos and Lipstick Foundation (SSL) began.
Hi, I am Dr. Elizabeth King, founder and Chief Inspiration Officer of SSL. I want to be honest with you and share our story because our story is about being passionate, scared, genuine, somewhat irrational, a lot insane. That in itself is quite ironic and almost comical because the 2 founders are 2 psychotherapists.
At this point, I have to divulge that accepting our humanism and laughing at ourselves is something that Yvonne and I do very well. It actually may be why she and I, up to this day, have never had an argument even under the most stressful situations. And girl, when you build a business the way we did, “stressful” is an understatement. (I’ll save some of those stories for our book.)
Anyway, I wish I could tell you that we spent years planning and gathering money, talent and resources to launch this company. I even wish that I could tell you that the person that has helped me create and build this company was someone that I knew and worked with for years. The operative word here is “wish” because Suits, Stilettos and Lipstick, SSL or as we affectionately now call it, “Suits” did not start in a standard fashion whatsoever. In fact, as a successful business woman and someone who studies human behavior and coaches businesses to be successful, I would even dare say to you “please don’t try this at home”.
So here goes our story. It will definitely explain why I am convinced that things do happen for a reason (even though we didn’t know it at the time). Hmmm…now thinking back at my life, this seems to be a very common theme that keeps repeating itself.
