As a psychotherapist, I see a lot of women who have “daddy issues”. Whether it was one tragic moment, or all throughout their lives, having problems with a father can be devastating. With Father’s Day approaching this weekend, I thought it would be good to address this topic because there is a lot of hurt that can surface during this time.
A toxic relationship with your dad can cause low self-esteem and low self-worth. It can either bring you down, but in order to turn this experience into something positive, you must stay strong.
A lot of the time, the struggles you encounter with your did can teach you what you want in a relationship and how you want to be treated. Looking at it from this perspective will affect how you relate to all men who come after your father.
Some of these relationships may be able to be repaired, while other may be too unhealthy to salvage. The best thing to do is be honest with yourself about your relationship with your father. It also helps to let go of the emotional toll it is putting on your life. Let go of any self-blame and forgive your dad. It is easier said than done, but you are giving yourself a favor by doing it, not him. Releasing this negative energy will allow you to grow without having this weight hanging over you.
If you are looking to try and fix your relationship with your father, express your thoughts with honesty and have a conversation. Some issues can be fixed with words, while others need to see actions.
If you aren’t looking for reconciliation with your father, but just want inner peace, you can seek counseling and this may help you work out your own thoughts and emotions. You can also try meditation or journaling. These two options will give you time alone to think and figure out your emotions.
This Father’s Day, put on your oxygen mask and relax. If you are lucky enough to have a good relationship with your dad, enjoy the day with him. Let him know that you love and appreciate him. If our relationship has been rocky, see if there is anything that can be done to repair the hurt feelings. Either way continue being self-aware, honest, brave, and of course, SASSY!
